Secondary Schools

SECONDARY SCHOOL APPLICATIONS

As you are no doubt aware the application process for secondary school is handled by Essex Local Authority and it is essential that you complete your application, once you have decided which school your child is attending, before the 31st October deadline.  The Essex Choice Adviser wrote to all primary schools, in September, 2010, and explained: "Our challenege is to enable 100% of families with children currently in Year 6 to submit an on time application, stating their preferred secondary schools.  In mid January, 2010, the number of non-applicants for a secondary school place was 272, compared to 396 in the same period 2009."

Don't forget, although we are a feeder school for the Colne Community School, and you might have decided to send your child there, it is still a requirement that you complete the application process otherwise your place could be lost.  As up to 30% of pupils, historically, opt for other schools in the area, we are developing this area of our website to identify the range of schools that our children do attend, with contact details and open mornings etc.  Again, the Colne Community School will appear as offering the widest range of links, but this is all part of the feeder school network process.

If you have any concerns about deciding upon a secondary school place, for your child, we are more than willing to discuss this with you in private, as this is not a matter for an open meeting.  Please contact the Head Teacher, Year 5, or Year 6 Class Teachers, if you would like to discuss the matter further.  The Local Authority has an independent Choice Advice Service, "...in order that all parents/carers have the best opportunity to make use of the options open to them when choosing a secondary school for their child.  This Service will help those paernts who have the most difficulty understanding the admissions system, to make informed decisions about which schools best meet their child's needs.  However, a Choice Adviser does not take decisions for parents and cannot guarantee a place at a particular school."

Remember, you have the right to express four choices of secondary school.  Places are allocated by the Admission Authority in line with the Admissions Policy for each school.

Talk to a Choice Adviser by telephone: 0845 603 2200 or 01245 437 622.  Lines are open 09.00 - 17.00, Monday to Friday.

Alternative line for people with hearing impairments: 0845 758 5592.

11+ SELECTIVE TESTS

If you are considering entering your child for the 11+, then the Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex (CSSE) Parental Information Guide, including the CSSE supplementary Information Form (SIF) for registering for the 11+ tests, can be found at the following address:  The Consortium of Selective Schools Administrative Office, P.O.Box 3987, Chelmsford, Essex, CM13SY.  The tests take place every November for entry the following September.

In common with all Secondary Schools, the CSSE accepts (through the Local Authority application procedure) applications only from pupils registered in the Year 6 cohort in the current year of application and testing.  Those children passing the selection test represent 2% of the Year 6 total population, so the level of competition for a place is very high indeed.  Discussion about sitting the 11+ is best done on a 1:1 basis, either by contacting the Headteacher, for Years 2 and 3, or Mrs Chambers, for Years 4 and 5.  We will give you a totally honest opinion based upon your child's performance in the extension groups.

COUNTY COUNCIL MESSAGE FOR PARENTS

PLEASE NOTE THAT CSSE SCHOOLS 11+ SELECTION TESTS WILL TAKE PLACE ON SATURDAY 22nd SEPTEMBER 2012 FOR ADMISSION SEPTEMBER 2013.

Re: 11+ Selection tests Autumn 2012 (for Year 7 admission September 2013 to Essex and Southend grammar and selective schools)

Changes to the admissions process governing places at all the CSSE grammar and selective schools in Essex and Southend, take effect this year. The changes are the result of the publication of a new statutory School Admissions Code that requires ‘testing before application’ to be introduced.

Parents of pupils currently in Year 5 seeking a selective place at a CSSE school for September 2013 will need to note the following:

• They must register with the CSSE for a test place no later than Friday 7th September 2012.

• They must attend the relevant school for the selection tests on Saturday 22nd September 2012. There is no change to the content or format of the test papers this year.

• Results of the tests will be posted to parents by the CSSE on Monday 15th October 2012.

Accompanying the test results will be information to enable parents to assess whether or not they have a realistic chance of securing a selective place before applying to the Local Authority for a school place.

• They must submit, after due consideration, an application to their home Local Authority naming their preferred schools by Wednesday 31st October 2012.

In due course the CSSE will be advising Essex andSouthendPrimary Schoolsof the dates and times when Year 5 pupils and parents will be able to visit each of these schools at open evenings during the Summer Term 2012. The information will also be displayed on the CSSE website www.csse.org.uk .

PLEASE NOTE THE EARLIEST YOU CAN REGISTER FOR THE 11+ SELECTION TESTS WITH THE CSSE IS FROM: SUNDAY 1st JULY 2012. A REGISTRATION FORM WILL BE AVAILABLE ON THE CSSE WEBSITE www.csse.org.uk FROM THAT DATE.

THE CLOSURE DATE FOR REGISTRATION WITH THE CSSE FOR THE 11+ SELECTION TEST IS: FRIDAY 7th SEPTEMBER 2012.
